Florida is probably most famous as the Treasure Ship capital of the world. During the days of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and Central America literally hundreds of ships laden with gold, silver and precious gems travelled these waters enroute to Spain. Hurricanes took their toll, whole fleets were lost. There are many left to be found.
Reefs and artificial reefs are the staples of diving South Florida. Many retired vessels now are home to numerous aquatic species.
Caves are also on the menu for those who favour diving underground as well as underwater.
